Planned Giving

Gifts may be made over an extended period of time. The benefits of establishing a planned gift is a possible reduction of your taxes- increasing income. You may schedule payments on a bi-yearly, quarterly, or monthly plan to fit your needs.

IRA Transfer

Gifts from your Individual Retirement Account allows tax-deductible contributions of up to $4,000 per year, or more if you are over age 50. Whatever you contribute towards your IRA comes off your yearly income, thereby reducing total tax liability. Congress just passed legislation that allows you to make tax-free contributions to AAFAKC from you IRA. To benefit you must be at least 70 1/2 and it applies only to IRA's.  The law is limited to $100,000 in 2006 and $100,000 in 2007. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 presents a new giving opportunity. The law allows individuals aged 70 ½ or older to now make gifts to qualified charitable organizations like the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Greater Kansas City Chapter using funds transferred directly from their IRAs. Additionally, these individuals will not have to pay taxes on the amounts transferred. You can transfer any amount you desire up to $100,000 on or before Dec. 31, 2007. The greatest benefits to you will be determined by circumstance as well as state and federal tax laws.

Please contact the AAFAKC office for additional information by phone: 816-333-6608 or by email: info@aafakc.org.

Here is how the law works: Martin is 72 and has made a pledge this year to AAFAKC of $150,000. He currently has an IRA of $15,000 that he plans on donating as his pledge. He had the choice of giving cash or other assets to fulfill the pledge, but now he has another option. If he transfers $15,000 to AAFAKC from his IRA on or before Dec. 31, 2007, she avoids paying income tax on $15,000. He will not, however, be able to use it as a charitable deduction—it is a pure wash. The Pension Protection Act gives him an easy and convenient way to benefit us without tax complications.

IRA Beneficiary

Another tax-smart strategy is to name the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Greater Kansas City Chapter as beneficiary of all or a portion of your IRA assets. By naming us as beneficiary of your IRA, you can leave us a gift that is free of all income and estate taxes because we are a charitable organization.

A Gift in Your Will

You can make a bequest designating a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the residue of your estate to pass onto AAFAKC at your death in honor/memory of your loved one. The primary financial benefit of gifts made by will is a reduction in estate taxes.

An Endowed Gift

Contributing to or establishing an endowment offers financial benefits similar to those available by making an outright gift or bequest. The main difference is that an endowment is structured so the investment income, rather than the principal, is used to fund the gift from year to year. If the entire principal remains invested, the endowment will continue in perpetuity.

Workplace Campaign

This campaign is the most effective way to organize your company around helping to improve the community you work and live in. AAFAKC can help you plan and implement a company account for employees to donate.
Honorary Gift: Gifts will be made in honor and acknowledgement of a loved one.

Stock Donation

Giving long-term, appreciated securities may provide a greater benefit to you-

  • You may save current income for day-to-day needs because a gift of stock does NOT come out of your cash flow.
  • You may save taxes two ways: Income tax and Capital Gains tax.
  • You may lower the “cost” of your gift.

Looking for a Financial Advisor?

Getting the most out of your money. A good financial advisor can swiftly and gracefully guide you through tricky financial waters. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to choose the right expert for you. Here are four elements you should consider when deciding on a financial advisor.

Communication. It is important to select someone with whom you feel totally at ease. He or she should ask about your goals, thoroughly explain your choices and be a good listener. Never choose someone who makes you feel intimidated or uncomfortable.

Education and credentials. Financial advising is a complex field. Verify the prospect’s educational background, including college and any additional specialized training. Also, look for professional credentials such as Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Check if he or she belongs to professional association and participates in continuing education programs.

Experience and reputation. Ask potential advisors for references and check them carefully. Inquire in the community to see if they are well-known and respected. Ask about their experience developing comprehensive financial plans and advising clients. Make sure they want to do more than sell financial products or manage your existing portfolio.

Fee structure. Understand exactly how your advisor is compensated for services. You should feel confident that your advisor always gives advise in you best interest, not his or hers.

Turn Treasures Into Tax Breaks

Approaching retirement, people who have accumulated items that have appreciated in value over time must now decide how to distribute those treasures. While such valuable items may represent a retirement nest egg, they also represent a tax liability.

Termed as “tangible personal property,” the IRS will want to tax any market value gain above cost basis at a punitive 28 percent for certain types of such property (unlike other forms of long-term capital gains taxed at no more than 15 percent).

Because a 28 percent capital gains rate applies to some tangible personal property, such as collectible artwork, gems and coins, now is an excellent time to donate those treasured items to us to receive a charitable deduction and avoid paying capital gains tax. (To avoid long-term capital gains taxes, however, the property must have appreciated in value and been owned for more than a year.)

Unlike property where proof of ownership lies in a document, such as stocks or real estate, tangible property must be something you can touch—stamp collections, artwork or antiques, etc.

When giving appreciated property—except in the case of a bequest—your gift must be used by Rockhurst High School in a way related to our tax-exempt purpose in order to claim a deduction based on the appreciated value of the gift. If we are unable to use the gift for charitable purposes and choose to sell it, your deduction is based on the lower of your cost basis or the fair market value.

Fair market value is determined through a qualified appraisal (necessary only if you plan to deduct more than $5,000). To claim a deduction—for any item worth more than $500—you must also complete IRS form 8283.

During the month of May, Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, we are asking you to consider making a donation and to become a member of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Greater Kansas City Chapter.

  • For $25, you can send a child to SuperKids Camp.

  • A $50 donation can provide a breathing machine for someone in need.

  • By donating $75, a dozen peak flow meters can be distributed to those who cannot afford them
  • For a donation of $100, you can underwrite the cost of instructors to teach Junior High Students about asthma management.

You have it in your power to make a difference in the lives of a family struggling with asthma and allergies. Won’t you help?
